Role Description

Nova is looking for a System Engineer to join the Elipson System Engineering team (Raman spectroscopy product line).

Part of Nova’s Elipson System Engineering organization (metrology for high-volume semiconductor manufacturing)

Own system-level features and capabilities end-to-end—taking ideas from concept and feasibility through specification, implementation, qualification, and customer deployment—to improve product performance, stability, and customer success

Work closely with software, optics, algorithm, electronics, and mechanical engineering teams, and support customers worldwide (in-house and on-site)

Hands-on, physics-based system problem solving spanning optics, spectral signal processing, calibration design, performance analysis, and automation—on a tool deployed at leading semiconductor manufacturers

Responsibilities

What will you be doing:

  • Perform advanced root cause analysis and troubleshooting of complex, physics-based system issues, both in-house and at customer sites
  • Conduct proof-of-concept and feasibility testing for new hardware, software, and algorithmic capabilities
  • Drive system-level features end-to-end: translate customer needs into feasibility studies, system requirements, cross-discipline design, and qualification plans
  • Collaborate closely with software, optics, algorithm, electronics, and mechanical engineering teams to deliver robust system performance
  • Perform data analysis and statistical evaluations to support system development decisions and customer performance optimization
  • Conduct performance analysis, error budgeting, and system characterization to quantify and reduce measurement variability
  • Design and implement system tests and calibrations (including specification definition and Python-based scripting/automation)

Requirements

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Physics, Electro-Optics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in system engineering, optical systems, or a multidisciplinary role in the semiconductor industry or adjacent fields
  • Hands-on proficiency in Python or MATLAB for data analysis, scripting, and automation
  • Background in optics (coursework, research, or professional experience)
  • Ability to work independently on complex activities in a project and matrix environment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach
  • Clear technical communication, written and verbal
  • Willingness to travel internationally (estimated 2–4 times per year)
  • Experience in semiconductor metrology or process control - Advantages
  • Experience with spectroscopy (Raman, optical emission, or similar) - Advantages
  • Experience with signal processing (spectral analysis, Fourier methods, peak fitting, deconvolution) - Advantages
  • Experience owning features or subsystems end-to-end (concept through customer deployment) - Advantages
  • Familiarity with calibration design, error budgeting, or statistical process control
  • Significant Python experience beyond scripting (e.g., tools, automation frameworks, data pipelines)

That special something you bring in:

  • Converting personal capabilities & characteristics into skills in a broader context
  • Strong systems thinking ability to connect physics, optics, algorithms, and software into measurable system performance
  • Hands-on, data-driven problem solver with strong root-cause analysis and troubleshooting skills in complex, multidisciplinary systems
  • Clear communicator and collaborative partner who can drive alignment across teams and interface effectively with customers
